Capacity bounds for ad-hoc networks using directional antennas

چکیده
Directional antennas can be useful in significantly increasing the capacity of wireless ad hoc networks. With directional antennas, independent communications between nodes can occur in parallel, even if the nodes are within range of each other. However, mutual interference by simultaneous transmissions limits the maximum number of such concurrent communications. Furthermore, it poses bounds on the amount of capacity gain one can achieve by using directional antennas instead of omni-directional ones. These bounds depend on the specific antenna type and its parameters, as well as higher layer protocol requirements. In this paper we calculate interferencebased capacity bounds for a generic antenna model as well as a real-world antenna model and analyze how these bounds are affected by important antenna parameters like gain and beamwidth Keywords-component; — capacity; ad-hoc; directional antennas formatting;

Asympotic capacity bounds for ad-hoc networks revisited: the directional and smart antenna cases
Directional and smart antennas can be useful in increasing the capacity of wireless ad hoc networks. A number of media access and routing protocols have been recently proposed for use with such antennas, and have shown significant performance improvements over the omni-directional case. However, it is important to explore if and how different directional and smart antenna designs affect the asy...

The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...
متن کاملOn the delay reduction of wireless ad hoc networks with directional antennas
It is shown that the throughput capacity of wireless ad hoc networks using omni-directional antennas (OMN networks) is significantly decreased with the increased number of nodes. One major reason lies in the interference caused by using omni-directional antennas, which just broadcast radio signal in all directions. Thus, a communication with multiple short-ranged hops is suggested in such netwo...
متن کاملOn Capacity of Wireless Networks Using Practical Directional Antennas
Capacity is one fundamental problem in wireless Ad hoc networks. Deploying directional antennas to wireless networks can reduce interference among concurrent transmissions and increase spatial reuse, while the technology of multi-channel can separate concurrent transmissions. Therefore, combining these two technologies into one wireless network is capable of great improvement on the network cap...
متن کاملMedium Access Control Protocols using Directional Antennas in Ad Hoc Networks
Using directional antennas can be beneficial for wireless ad hoc networks consisting of a collection of wireless hosts. To best utilize directional antennas, a suitable Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol must be designed. Current MAC protocols, such as the IEEE 802.11 standard, do not benefit when using directional antennas, because these protocols have been designed for omnidirectional anten...
